What Vegan Leather Is, and Why We Use It

Every collar, harness and leash we make is vegan leather. It is the first question we get asked about the material, so here is a straight answer.

What it is

Vegan leather is a made material with a leather-like surface and a fabric backing. It is not animal hide, and it is not trying to be a secret about that. It is manufactured, which is the point.

Because it is manufactured, it behaves consistently. A hide has a grain, a thickness that varies across the animal, and marks from the life the animal had. That is part of the appeal of real leather and it is also its difficulty. A made material arrives the same every time, which is what you want when you are cutting a 1.5 cm strap for a chihuahua's neck and it has to be identical to the last one.

Why we use it

The first reason is the obvious one. We make things for animals. Making them out of animals sat badly.

The second is colour. Hide takes dye within a range. A made surface does not have that limit, which is why the range runs from Bitter Chocolate and Cacao through to Butter, Matcha, Candy and Neon Green, and why we can do a glossy patent finish and a soft suede finish in the same colourway. A traditional leather workshop cannot offer that.

The two finishes

Glossy is the patent-look surface. It reflects light, it wipes down, and it holds bright colour well. Most of the Evil Eye range and all of the Basic colourways use it.

Suede is the matte, brushed finish. It is softer to the hand and reads as quieter, which is why the deeper colours sit there: Bitter Chocolate, Cinnamon, Sand Beige, Sugar Pink.

What we pair it with

Solid brass hardware, plated in gold, and nickel-free throughout. That last part matters more than it sounds. Nickel is one of the more common contact allergens, and a collar is against skin for most of the day.

The one range that is not leather

The Lovefool range is cut from cotton denim instead, in three washes. Same gold-plated hardware, different material entirely.
