How to Tell a Genuine Swarovski® Crystal

Search for a crystal dog collar and you will find a very wide price range for what look like identical products. Some of them are set with genuine Swarovski® crystals. Most are not. The listings rarely make it obvious which is which.

What makes a Swarovski® crystal different

It comes down to the cut. Ordinary decorative glass is moulded, and a moulded facet is soft and slightly rounded. A Swarovski® crystal is cut to an exact facet pattern with machine precision, so the faces meet at clean, sharp angles.

That matters because of what happens to light. Light enters the stone, bounces off the internal faces and comes back out. The more precise the angles, the more of that light returns to your eye instead of scattering. It is why a genuine stone flashes in daylight and a moulded one just looks shiny.

You are not paying for a rarer material. You are paying for the precision of the cut.

Three things to check before you buy

Is the seller an authorised partner? Swarovski® supplies its crystals through official channels to partners it has approved. A seller who is one will say so plainly, because it took something to get there. A seller who only says "crystal" or "crystal elements" is usually telling you something by what they have left out.

Is the stone set, or stuck on? A genuine crystal is normally set into a metal holder that grips it. A flat stone glued to the surface will eventually come off, and it will not catch light the same way even before it does.

Does the price make sense? If a collar covered in stones costs the same as a plain one, the stones are not Swarovski®. The cost of the crystals is most of the cost of the piece.

How ours are made

Paw London is an authorised Swarovski® partner. Every stone we set is a genuine Swarovski® crystal supplied through official channels, and every one is set individually by hand into a gold-plated holder.

The collection runs across seven crystal colours: clear, rose pink, red, topaz, smoke, aquamarine and amethyst purple. Which colour a piece uses depends on the range rather than the leather, so Alex, Lily White, Louis and Gatsby all carry clear, while Alice, Emma and Chelsea carry rose pink.

Because the crystals are cut and set individually, every piece is made to order once you buy it. That is also why the Swarovski® collection cannot be returned or exchanged, and why we would rather you got in touch about sizing before you order than after.

Collars run XS to 2XL, harnesses XS to XL, and the leashes are 115 cm and hold dogs up to 30 kg.
