The most common sizing mistake is guessing from your dog's weight. Two dogs of the same weight can have very different necks, and a collar that fits a whippet will not fit a pug. Measure instead. It takes a minute.
How to measure
Use a soft tape measure and run it around the widest part of your dog's neck, low down where the collar will actually sit rather than up behind the ears. Keep the tape flat against the coat, not pulled tight.
Then check the fit: you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the tape and your dog's neck. If two fingers do not fit, it is too tight. If your whole hand slides under, it is too loose and your dog can back out of it.
If you land between two sizes, take the larger one, or ask us for a custom size. We make them at no extra cost, across the whole range.
Our dog collar sizes
The two figures are the first and last hole, so each size covers a range rather than a single measurement.
| Size | Neck | Width | Typical breeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 17 to 23 cm | 1.5 cm | Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, newborn puppies |
| S | 22 to 30 cm | 1.5 cm | Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier |
| M | 27 to 35 cm | 2 cm | French Bulldog, Jack Russell, Pug, Boston Terrier |
| L | 32 to 40 cm | 2 cm | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle |
| XL | 37 to 45 cm | 2 cm | Border Collie, Bulldog, Springer Spaniel |
| 2XL | 42 to 50 cm | 2.5 cm | Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer |
| 3XL | 47 to 55 cm | 2.5 cm | German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman |
Not every range runs the full ladder. The Basic collars stop at 2XL, in six sizes. The Evil Eye and pearl ranges go all the way to 3XL. Swarovski® stops at 2XL. If the size you need is not on the ladder, we can make it.
Cats
A cat collar is a different cut, not a scaled-down dog collar. Ours are 1.3 cm wide throughout with four adjustment holes, in three sizes: XS covers 17 to 22 cm, S covers 22 to 28 cm, M covers 27 to 33 cm. The same two-finger rule applies.
Sighthounds
Whippets, greyhounds, lurchers and salukis need a different shape entirely, because their heads are narrower than their necks. An ordinary collar slips straight off. We cover that in a separate piece.
Puppies
A puppy will outgrow its first collar. Measure now rather than buying ahead, and repeat the two-finger check every few weeks.
Still not sure
Get in touch before you order and send us the measurement. Every piece we make is handmade, so a custom size costs no more than a standard one. We would rather answer a question than send you the wrong size.
